A family walks through the Ocean Tunnel at Gran Acuario Mazatlán

A living world

That's the name of the new chapter at Gran Acuario Mazatlán. Here's where the idea comes from and what you'll find once you walk through the door.

For years we introduced ourselves with two lines. First “Somos llenos de vida” (we're full of life), to tell you who we were. Then “Tienes que vivirlo” (you have to live it), to invite you in. Now that thousands of families have walked the tunnel and stood in front of the Ocean Window, we want to name what happens inside: a living world.

More than 250 species from the Sea of Cortez live in more than 30 habitats across three zones: Coast, Land and Sea. Sea lions shoot through the water, rays glide inches from the glass and sharks swim right over your head in the Ocean Tunnel.

Why “a living world”

Three words, and each one carries something. “A”, because this world exists here in Mazatlán, and you won't find it anywhere else in northwest Mexico. “World”, because it's a full journey through coast, land and sea that you discover on foot. “Living”, because everything you see breathes, eats, grows and changes from one day to the next, and you can only feel that in front of the glass.

Every visit finds something new

A living world is never the same twice. The school of fish regroups, the sea lions change their game, and the fish that was hiding in the rocks yesterday is swimming by the glass today. That's why people who come back say they found a different aquarium. Once is never enough.

We want everyone who walks in to leave feeling that this sea belongs to them too.

How to stay part of this world

  • Come back at a different time of year. Every visit shows you something the last one didn't.
  • At the beach, take your trash with you and skip single-use plastics.
  • When you buy fish and seafood, respect size limits and closed seasons.
  • Tell someone what you saw.

Next time you stop in front of a window, give it a minute. What's in front of you is a living world, and it's right here in Mazatlán.
